CRERATING HYPERLINKS

Making hyperlinks with relative paths To specify a path to a document in the same folder, type the document''s name. For the example below, you would type "directions.bmp".

Making hyperlinks with relative paths To specify a path through a folder immediately below the map''s location in the file system, start the path with the folder name. Do not use a "" or drive letter prefix. For the example below, you would type "Graphicsdirections.bmp".

To specify a path to a document in a sibling folder, start the path with ".." and the folder name—for example, "..graphics", where the file is in Graphics" and the map is in "maps" and both folders are in another folder. For the example below, you would type "..Graphicsdirections.bmp".

Hyperlink tool

selecting hyperlinks in the layer properties dialog box

In ArcGIS, a Hyperlink in a layer allows you, by clicking on a feature in the Map Document, to display images or text files, open documents or other map documents, macros and even URLs.

Hyperlink tool for
- Field based document
- Dynamic hyperlink
In field based document hyperlink, the target document, URL, or macro value that will be launched is specified for each feature in a field in the layer’s attribute table. The values of the field used for the hyperlink can include the full path to the target document or the full URL of the target Web page. Alternatively, the field value may just contain the name of the target document or Web page you can use the Hyperlink Base property to specify the pathname or URL, where the target can be found. You can specify the Hyperlink Base property using MAP PROPERTIES in the FILE menu in ArcMap to manage hyperlinks; if the location of the target changes you can simply edit this one setting instead of having to edit each value of the field providing the hyperlink targets.

In Dynamic hyperlink method, the target document or URL is specified for a particular feature in the ADD HYPERLINK dialog box, without using a field. (Dynamic hyperlinks don’t support macro values as targets). The Add Hyperlink dialog box, lets you specify either a file or URL target. The name of targets you specify are stored with the layer in the map. They are stored with the layer if you save the layer to a file. You can define any number of dynamic hyperlinks for a feature. If more then one hyperlink is defined for a feature, when the feature is clicked with the Hyperlink tool a dialog will appear from which the desired hyperlink can be selected. The Hyperlink Base setting has no effect on dynamic hyperlinks.

Defining field-based hyperlinks:
1. Bring the Layer Properties dialog box. Click DISPLAY tab.
2. Select SUPPORT HYPERLINKS using field, click the dropdown arrow, and select the field, which contains the hyperlink targets. The field containing the hyperlinks target has to be set up before you can specify hyperlinks in this dialog box.
3. Click the Document, URL, or Macro option to specify what type of hyperlink the selected field contains. If you choose the Macro option, specify the macro that the values in the field will be sent to when the hyperlinks are triggered.
4. The Hyperlink Base setting has no effect if you specify that the target values are to be sent to a macro.

For Images use same folder that for your data on your flash. In a field-based hyperlink, write the complete path name of the images into the records for your layer. You can use copy and paste when inserting the path name into the records.

You can do next steps:
1. Open your map document and bring Attribute Table to your layer-Options-Add Field. Name the Field Image; make it text with at least 50 spaces. OK
2. For selecting hyperlinks bring Layer Properties and click Display Tab. Apply Hyperlinks for your field. Click Document and apply.

Another way – use Select Features tool from the menu bar in your active layer. Turn off all another layers. Select the object. Open Attribute Table-Selection. If the field is empty for Image Field, you should edit this field and put same information through View-Toolbars-Editor and Advanced Editor. With the Editor toolbar open, select Start Editing for editing and add or change values in the field. Under the Images Field write the source path (d:DATAcourthose.tif) stored in your Data folder on your flash drive. Hit the Enter key, select Save Editing from the Editor toolbar. Now select the Hyperlink tool, drag it to object, and left-click on the feature and the path name for the image. Clear selection before new selection.

Dynamic hyperlinks
With this method, the target document or URL is specified for a particular feature in the Add Hyperlink dialog box. (Dynamic hyperlinks don''t support macro values as targets.) This lets you specify hyperlinks directly without having to use a field to supply the targets. The Add Hyperlink dialog box lets you specify either a file or a URL target. The names of targets you specify in this way are stored with the layer in your map. They are also stored with the layer if you save the layer to a file. You can define any number of dynamic hyperlinks for a feature. If more than one hyperlink is defined for a feature, when the feature is clicked with the Hyperlink tool, a dialog box will appear from which the desired hyperlink can be selected. The Hyperlink Base setting has no effect on dynamic hyperlinks.

Making hyperlinks with relative paths
Sometimes you may want to give a map that contains hyperlinks to someone who does not have access to your network resources. Just as you can save the map with relative paths to the data, you can also specify hyperlinks that refer to a location relative to the map.

How to define and access hyperlinks

Accessing a feature''s hyperlink

Make sure the layer containing the feature for which you want to access a hyperlink is checked on (visible) in the table of contents.

Click the Hyperlink tool
Any visible features in the map that have hyperlinks defined are drawn in blue, the default color, or outlined in blue in the case of polygons. When you are over a feature for which a hyperlink exists, the mouse pointer turns into a pointing hand and you see a pop-up tip with the name of the target.

Click the feature.
A hyperlink is invoked. If more than one hyperlink has been defined for the feature you clicked, a dialog box will appear from which you can select the hyperlink you want to launch.
